The Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of Polish Academy of Sciences (NCAC PAS) and Warsaw University Astronomical Observatory are extending an invitation to the “ESO Workshop”. The meeting will be held on June 25 - 26, 2018 at NCAC PAS, Warsaw, Bartycka 18.
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is the prominent intergovernmental science and technology organisation in astronomy. Poland became a member state of ESO in August 2015 and Polish astronomers have full rights applying for observing time on ESO facilities located in Chile. Unfortunately, the number of submitted proposals and the success rate are unsatisfying. The aim of the proposed workshop is to help the Polish astronomical community to be more effective in applying for observing time. There are two main aspects of the workshop:
Firstly, our speakers will talk about their experiences with work in various ESO committees; they will discuss rules of proposal evaluation and present available instruments on ESO telescopes. Colleagues, who were awarded observing time, will tell us how to succeed.
Secondly, we will organise informal one-to-one sessions with our experts, to allow participants to talk with them about their proposal ideas, problems, doubt or just ask for advice. We encourage participants to declare their wish to participate in such one-to-one sessions, and to indicate their topic of interest.
PhD students and postdocs are particularly encouraged to participate in this workshop.
Online registration is available here. The deadline for registration is June 15, 2018.
